Tips to Man Up the Locks
Men are typically seen to care less about their hair compared to women. However, this seems to be disproved by men who see the need to compete in today’s changing times.
No longer are wheels, abs, or bank accounts the measure of a man. How he maintains his hair has also become key to spelling his success.
For those who haven’t joined the pack and continue to sport unkempt locks, thinking that the ladies would find it sexy, it’s best that you read on and think again.
Here are hair care tips for various hair types to help man up the locks:
*The Cruise
Tom Cruise locks-the luckiest of them all. Straight hair is the easiest hair type to manage; however, only a few are gifted with this type of crowning glory.
What’s more, men with Tom Cruise locks do not style their hair to their advantage. Their locks tend to look flat and floppy and, at times, longer than their date’s hair.
Keeping the hair clean and short or growing them out chin-length, at the most, is a great way to keep the ladies coming.

Shampoo Ingredients One Should Look for to Maintain Healthy Hair
Tons of shampoo and hair care products in the market today compete not by offering their best formulations but through celebrity endorsements and enticing advertisements. Sadly, most people fall prey into this consumerist plot.
Nevertheless, one can elude this trap and pick the best by carefully examining the product’s label. The ingredients included in a shampoo are way more relevant compared to the personalities endorsing it.
The following are ingredients a consumer ought to look for in a shampoo as these are proven safe and effective in maintaining the good condition of one’s crowning glory:
*Silicone
Most shampoos don’t list silicone in their labels as they often note it as dimethicone or cyclimethicone. Either way, silicone helps protect the hair from damage and provides a shiny appearance by coating down the hair shafts and reducing static cling. This is especially good for coarse or curly hair as it works for deep hydration.

Skin and Scalp Conditions that Induce Hair Loss Problems
Skin and scalp diseases are one of the many causes of hair thinning and hair loss problems in both men and women. In fact, too much shedding, excessive oiliness, irregular scabbing, and swelling may hinder the healthy hair growth. With that, treatment of these conditions is essential to sustain the beauty and good health of the hair.
The following is a list of problematic scalp conditions that are in one way or another accountable for triggering hair loss:
* Boil - is a skin infection due to staphylococci bacteria that enters the skin through the hair follicles. Technically, boil is known as furuncle, a painful nodule formed in the skin by restricted inflammation of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. However, when the infection caused by the bacteria spreads to the nearby follicles, it is called a carbuncle, which causes pain, inflammation, and hair loss.
* Dissecting Cellulitis - is an unusual chronic scalp condition that causes progressive scarring and degeneration of the scalp skin and hair follicles. It is usually associated with the thickening of the scalp in large areas with pockets of pus trapped under the skin. When not properly treated, dissecting cellulitis may lead to large areas of balding which have a greater potential to cause permanent hair loss problems.

A Brief Look at Early Surgical Hair Loss Treatment Techniques
It was a welcome relief when scientists finally unlocked the hair loss mystery. It led to the development of more appropriate, systematic, and effective methods of fighting the course of hair loss. Desperate attempts to restore lost hair due to alopecia from the ancient civilizations until the turn of the 19th century had little to no help at all.
One of the oldest and rational approaches to hair loss is surgical hair loss treatment; and the first recorded initiative to bring hair restoration to a different level was in 1822 in Wurzburg, Germany. Dr. J. Dieffenbach investigated the idea of using hair, feathers, and skin in animals for auto-transplantation.
However, it was not until a hundred years later when Dr. Dieffenbach’s concept of hair transplantation was actually materialized. In 1939, Japanese dermatologist Dr. Okuda experimented on using small grafts to fix cosmetic problems concerning the scalp hair, eyebrows, and mustache. Using a strip containing permanent hair-bearing follicles, Dr. Okuda restored the affected area but noticed bad aesthetic results. The procedure left scars on the donor areas and thus noted that slightly smaller punches produce better aesthetic results.
From the success of his concept came the following surgical techniques which to some extent, however, were more adverse than therapeutic.

Hair Loss and Stem Cell Research
The theory behind using stem cells to treat hair loss is actually not as complex as it sounds. In the case of hair loss, stem cell therapy is an approach used on dead hair cells. It holds the principle that because dead hair cells have lost the ability to regenerate, new hair cells produced from cultivated stem cells can theoretically replace the dead ones and consequently, obtain the ability to produce healthy hair again.
Inactive Stem Cells
It has been generally assumed that androgenetic alopecia or male/female pattern baldness is triggered by the failure of the stem cells in producing progenitor cells in the scalp to stimulate hair growth. This results from the malnutrition of the follicles due to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) build-up in genetically DHT-sensitive follicles.
Unlike progenitor cells, stem cells can differentiate into several types of cells (totipotent). Progenitor cells can only morph into certain types of other cells. Cells that have died or been damaged are replaced by progenitor cells.
Experimentation on Mice
The human scalp is said to bear 100,000 hair follicles. Experts have always believed that through stem cell therapy, fully-functioning hair follicles can be cultivated.
The only main concern of researchers is isolating the hair follicle stem cells that could be used for regeneration.

How I Conquered My Hair Thinning Dilemma!
Every one of us has his or her one-of-a-kind hair loss story buried deep inside. Some might be open about sharing, while most would prefer to keep it to themselves. As for me, I want to share it to all the hair loss sufferers out there for them to realize that they are not alone in the battle to fight the ever-increasing hair loss issues. This is my very own story on how I conquered my hair loss dilemma.
I remembered my hair gradually getting thinner and finer during my early twenties. It started when I began pursuing my college degree. During those days, I was part of a young group of people who usually go out at night to unwind. When I started smoking and drinking, I noticed that my hair was becoming dull and dry but I never paid much attention to it. However, when I got stressed out I began to observe that my hair was falling off at a faster rate. That was when I started to be alarmed because I got the devastating feeling that I would be experiencing hair loss. So, like every other person who is afraid to experience excessive hair loss, I began my search for a treatment that will help me fight my condition.
During those days when my I was losing my hair, I started to become aloof and anti-sociaI. I never thought that my hair falling off would make me feel vulnerable and uncomfortable. I felt the sudden fear of becoming the subject of criticisms and bullying. With that fear came the feeling of insecurity and depression.
My best friend noticed my problem. He was the one who helped me search for the right hair loss treatment. He told me that his cousin is also experiencing hair loss. One day, he told me that his cousin suggested that I should use a hair loss treatment solution. He then proceeded in telling me about the 30-day hair loss treatment free trial offered by Leimo International. With my best friend’s help we called the Leimo Hotline and availed of the Leimo Hair Treatment Pack 30-day free trial.
Within a span of 30 days, I was constantly under the Leimo hair loss treatment program. During my treatment, I saw that my hair was improving. The dullness and dryness was slowly fading. I also felt that my hair was becoming smoother, shinier and healthier. My flakes and dandruff on my scalp were also lessening. With that result, I finally decided to buy my very own Leimo Hair Treatment Pack when my 30-day trial ended.
Today, I am still an avid Leimo user. Within the 2-year span of treatment I have seen better results. My hair is regaining its former beauty. As days go by, my hair is becoming stronger and healthier. The thickness and volume of my hair is also improving.
I am very happy because finally I have conquered my hair thinning problem. With this, I want to thank Leimo for giving me a chance to regain my crowning glory. Without the Leimo suite of hair loss products, I would not experience the advantages of having a beautiful and healthy head of hair once again.

Duke treats body, spirit for cancer patients
Durham, N.C. — Breast cancer treatments take everything a woman has to endure – physically and emotionally.
That's why it's important to find helpful ways of coping.
At the Duke Cancer Institute Tuesday, patients got pampering from some local boutiques to go along with their treatment.
"Spa day is a perfect example of adding those extra moments of caring that allow that sense of rejuvenation for our patients and family members," said Duke's Carolyn Carpenter.
They offered massage, reflexology and advice on wigs for those whose treatments cause hair loss.
There is good news on that front in the form of new research as well.
Tamara Nuckols comes to Duke every three weeks to get Herceptin. She has HER-2 positive breast cancer, an aggressive form that affects 20 percent of patients. It was also the subject of a game-changing study for a drug called T-DM1, an antibody-drug conjugate that some people compare to a smart bomb.
Dr. Kimberly Blackwell, the lead author of a large global study of T-DM1, says the drug has two benefits: It binds to the cancer cell then kills it, and the side effects are less serious,
"Women on this new treatment don't lose their hair," she said. "They don't look sick and coming once every three weeks to get a treatment allows them to live their lives."
Because the drug only targets cancer cells, use of T-DM1 significantly increases survival.
"I was very excited because that would be a drug that I really will benefit from," said Nuckols.
At Duke on Tuesday, she could get all in a soothing atmosphere that also benefited the spirit.

Protein discovery could lead to treatment of early baldness
-->
Male pattern baldness
The research
New medications being researched
'No cure for baldness'
A treatment for thinning hair could be developed after US researchers identify a protein that could be responsible for male pattern baldness
29th March 2012 - Researchers in the US have identified a chemical that could be responsible for the most common cause of baldness in men, and their discovery could lead to more effective and targeted treatments.
One UK expert described the findings as "promising", and said while it would not pave the way for a cure for baldness, it could help men who were beginning to lose their hair.
Male pattern baldness
Male pattern baldness affects about 80% of men under the age of 70. It occurs when hair follicles shrink and produce microscopic hairs which grow for a shorter amount of time than normal follicles. The main symptom is a receding hairline and hair loss at the crown of the head. Toward the end of the stages of male pattern baldness, the only hair remaining is in a horseshoe pattern around the base of the scalp.
According to a study in Science Translational Medicine, bald men tend to have an abnormal amount of a protein called prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) on their scalps. This protein and its derivative, 15-dPGJ2, inhibit hair growth.
"We have really identified a factor that is way out of whack by actually studying the disorder," says Dr George Cotsarelis, a professor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania.
The research
The researchers looked for potential biological causes of baldness, examining scalp tissue from balding and non-bald spots from men with male pattern baldness - also known as androgenetic alopecia - and then corroborating their findings using mice.
They found that levels of PGD2 protein in bald areas of the scalp were three times higher than in areas of the scalp where hair was growing. When the researchers added PGD2 to cultured hair follicles, the hair was significantly shorter, while its derivative, 15-dPGJ2, completely blocked hair growth.
New medications being researched
The authors write that their findings should lead to new medications which inhibit the action of PGD2 and delay male pattern baldness. "This should work in all men who have male pattern baldness,” Dr Cotsarelis tells us. Some companies are already developing such compounds, in one case for asthma. “It shouldn’t take too long,” he says.
The authors call for further studies that might involve testing creams, and could also determine whether targeting prostaglandins will benefit women with male pattern baldness.
'No cure for baldness'
"This is very promising research and much better than anything that's come out in the last few years," says Marilyn Sherlock, chairman of the Institute of Trichologists. However, she tells us: "I would be very surprised if this helps a bald man."
Mrs Sherlock believes treatments based on this research would be more likely to benefit someone seeing their hair beginning to thin. "Once a hair follicle has completely collapsed and shrivelled and disappeared, you can't make a hair grow there unless you transplant it," she says.
